Ink and Permanent Marker

Because ink and permanent marker stains can easily and rapidly spread throughout your carpet fibers, it is best to treat the stains as soon as possible. It is important for you to know what kind of material you are dealing with so that you can avoid any permanent damage to your carpet, if you are unsure call a professional for advice. Here I have some methods you can try when cleaning up these types of stains.

Method #1: First, begin by vacuuming the area; this will remove any loose substance in your carpet. Use 90% isopropyl rubbing alcohol or the70% solution and with a white cloth begin to blot the stain. Allow the alcohol to dwell for about 30 minutes to an hour. Next, using a clean cloth blot the area, you can rinse the cloth or use a new one and then blot again. Make sure not to use any colored cloths to avoid any color transfer to your carpet. Also, remember to always test the solution in an inconspicuous area before cleaning process begins, to avoid any damage to your carpet. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process again. If the stain is still visible, you might have to remove some of the carpet or contact a professional.

Method #2: If the stain is on upholstery, begin by generously applying an oxidizer to ink stain and 1” around areas and allow it 15 minutes dwell time. Then, apply a solvent to the ink stain; this should remove the stain color. Next, gently agitate using a carpet shark or bone scraper until ink dissolves, then re-apply oxidizer. Lastly, you must rinse by doing a hot water extraction. If only stain color remains re-apply the oxidizer and cover with a moist towel. Then, heat with a steam iron for about 15 seconds.
