Furniture Stains

The most common types of Furniture stains are caused by wooden or metal furniture such as wooden entertainment centers, sofas, loveseats, and recliners that bleed into your carpet leaving a stain. Rust stains are created because of the varnish metals on your furniture. Furniture stains are cause by tannin color leaching from wood, dye from furniture finish, or rust from metal leg supports. You may not always have success removing dye caused by furniture finish, but will be able to remove the stains caused by tannin color or rust stains. Here are a couple methods you can use depending on which type of stain you are dealing with.

For Rust stains first apply a solvent to the affected area, and agitate gently until stain disappears and then do a hot water extraction.
For Tannin stains if it determined to be from wood, apply an oxidizer to the stained fibers. Next, you must allow 12 hour dwell time so cover area with a clear plastic sheet such as a sandwich wrap. Depending on the severity of the stain you might have to repeat the cleaning process, make sure to mix a fresh solution of oxidizer and add to area.
For Dye from furniture finish begin by removing the oil based contamination using a solvent. Proceed by extraction rinse and blotting dry. Lastly, apply an oxidizer, cover with DCI light, and allow it to dwell for 8 hours.

Another method you can use is; begin by pouring water and paint thinner into a spray bottle and shake well. Make sure to test the solution in an inconspicuous area first. Next, spray solution into affected area and allow dwelling for about five minutes. Proceed by using a wet/dry vacuum to remove solution from carpet. When all the solution has been removed spray the area 2 to 3 times with water, and then extract using the wet/dry vacuum.

These types of stains are difficult to remove and you can try to prevent them by cleaning up any spills on you furniture before it gets on your carpet, by not placing any furniture in areas prone to getting wet, and when you get your carpet steam cleaned ask for carpet protectors.
