Restretching Carpet: How To Fix Carpet Wrinkles

Restretching Carpet: How To Fix Carpet Wrinkles - APEX Carpet Cleaning

Even if your carpet is in excellent condition, you may begin to notice wrinkles, ripples, or general loosening. This can occur in carpeting that is only a few years old and is not only unsightly, but also, a trip hazard. If you are wondering how to get wrinkles out of your carpet, turn to the 8 steps below.

Don’t worry if you get lost. Find the instructional video below.

Step 1 // Gather Your Tools

You may have some of these tools at home, but you may have to purchase or rent a few.

  • Pry Bar
  • Flat-Head Screwdriver
  • Needle-Nose Pliers
  • Tack Strips
  • Rubber Mallet

Step 2 // Prep The Room

Before re-stretching your carpet, you will need to remove the ground level molding and all of the furniture in the room.

Step 3 // Prep The Carpet

Use your flat-head screwdriver and needle-nose pliers to remove the staples in the carpet and padding. Tack strips can be removed with the pry bar.

Step 4 // Cut New Tack Strips

Now, it’s time to put on your heavy duty work gloves and measure and cut new tack strips. Make sure the strips are 1 inch from the wall, and the gripping nails are pointing towards the wall. Use the mallet and chisel to tack the strips in place.

Step 5 // Re Stretching Your Carpet

Now comes the fun part! The base of the power stretcher should be positioned against the wall, making sure the teeth are at least 6 inches from the wall. Starting in the center of the wall, push the lever down, so the teeth engage with the carpet. Stretch all the way to the wall and continue until the full edge has been stretched into place. Repeat throughout.

Step 6 // Stretching The Corners

One of the challenges with carpet pulling is that the power stretcher can’t quite get into the corners. This is where the knee kicker comes in. Dig the teeth of the knee kicker into the area that needs to be smoothed or stretched. Push forward until you have achieved the amount of stretching you require.

Step 7 // Trim and Re-Embed

After stretching is complete, you will need to trim any excess carpet. Use the carpet cutter to trim any excess and then to embed the tacks below. Finish things off by using the staple gun to secure the padding to the carpet.

Step 8 // Replace Molding and Return Furniture

Last, but not least, replace the molding and move the furniture back into the room.
