Removing varnish from unwanted areas can be a real hassle. Solvents that can remove the varnish might also remove color in the carpet, so if you are unsure it is best to contact a professional for advice. It is always safer to know what kind of materials you are dealing with to avoid any permanent damage to your carpet. Remember to always test your solutions in an inconspicuous area before applying to the affected area.
First, begin by using a butter knife and scrape the stained carpet to loosen as much of the varnish as possible. Using dry cleaning fluid or isopropyl alcohol wet a clean white towel and place over the affected area and let it sit for about 10 minutes to dissolve the varnish. Next, blot the area a couple times. Remember to always make your way in from the outer edges of the stain and move towards the center to prevent spreading the stain. Then, you need to rinse the area using a sponge and warm water; this allows the water to rinse away the rest of the varnish and the solution without wetting the pad. Then, pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. If the stain remains you can repeat the first step and add more of the solution, allowing dwell time of 10 minutes, and then blot with a sponge and water. Next, you will make another mixture this time using ½ tsp. of dishwashing soap and 1 cup of warm water. Gently mix the solution and then apply the solution to the affected area with a sponge. After you’ve added the solution allow it to sit for about 5 minutes. Nest, using dry paper towels blot the area dry. Now you need to rinse the affected area using a clean white towel and cold water. Lastly, once the stain has been removed place a couple paper towels over the affected area and place something over them to apply pressure. This will allow it to absorb any remaining liquid in the carpet fibers. Leave the paper towels overnight and then once it has dried vacuum the carpet.
For this second method, begin by applying a solvent to the affected area and leave for about 5 minutes. Then, agitate using a spoon to dissolve the varnish into the solvent. Apply a bit more of a solvent and continue to gently agitate with the spoon. Next, you must do a hot water extraction rinse. If the stain remains blot the affected area with a dry towel and liberally apply an oxidizer and cover with a plastic sheet and allow it to dry thoroughly. The stain should disappear as it dries.
